March 2010 & March 2010 Calendar

COUNTRY LANE QUILTS 7TH ANNIVERSARY

Our 7th anniversary is March 3rd.  Come in and help us eat our cake.  We will also have a storewide sale – 20% off of everything but sewing machines.  This is limited to stock on hand.

DON’T FORGET FAT QUARTER WEDNESDAYS

All fat quarters are 50 cents off of the regular price of $2.75.

7th ANNUAL HIGH DESERT QUILT SHOW

Now is the time to start thinking about the quilts, wall hangings and table runners you will be entering in the quilt show.  We haven’t decided yet on the prize for “Best in Show” but it will be a good one.  Janome has donated a sewing machine for the last few years and hopefully they will continue to do so.

QUILT SHOW CHALLENGE

We are having a Quilt Show Challenge for the quilt show this year.  Come in and pick up the packet.  The cost is $10 and $7 of that will go towards prizes.  There will be 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place awards.  People attending the quilt show will determine the awards.   NOTE:   The project does not need to be in until the 1st of July 2010.  You can make most anything that you want as long as you use most of the challenge fabric.  There is ½ yard in the kit and more is available if you need it.

JANOME

This year Janome will be 150 years old.  To celebrate this event, Janome has come out with some new machines.  Come in and check them out.  The NEW Janome 3160 has a thread cutter, a hard case and an extension table for $799.  For all of you who want a thread cutter and can’t afford the 6600P, this is the machine for you.  There are 3 new machines available now and all weight under 13 pounds.

QUILTING RETREAT

We are in the process of planning a quilting retreat.  It will be at the Malheur Field Station on the Bird Refuge.  It will be held August 19th thru the 22nd.  Lucy Kingsley, from Eugene, will be teaching a class in Landscape Quilting.  We do not have all the plans firmed up yet, but put these dates on your calendar.  It will be a great time to make your favorite quilt, there will be plenty of help, finish up some of those UFO’s that have been in your sewing room for years and get together with other quilters.  All meals will be furnished.  If you are interested in the Wildlife Refuge, there will be a tour available of it and the surrounding area.  We will let you know more of the details in next month’s newsletter.  If you are interested, give us a call or send us an email.

NEW FABRIC

Fixit by Avlyn:  This is a masculine fabric for the fix it man in your family.  We will be having a class in April to make a very simple and basic quilt using this fabric.  It will be on our website soon but if you would like to check it out, either come in or go onto:  www.avlyn.com.  The project is there also.

CLASSES

Class Notes:  To take quilting classes there is a certain proficiency required.  At the beginning of the “Beginning” classes we will teach rotary cutting techniques. All students need to be comfortable with their sewing machine.  For the “Intermediate” and “Advanced” classes you need to have been quilting for awhile and be very comfortable with a rotary cutter and using a ¼” seam.

Tools needed for all classes are a sewing machine in good working order, rotary cutter, pins, seam ripper, cutting mat and ruler.  You must be able to operate your sewing machine.  There may be other specific items needed for a particular class.  These will be listed on a supply list.

Pre-registration is required and all classes need to be paid for at registration, if there is a fee. This will ensure that there is space available for you.  The minimum class size is 3 and the maximum is 8, unless the instructor agrees to more students.

Barbara and LaDonna will be teaching classes/demos until Patty comes back in the Spring.  Most of them will be easy and quick classes or demos.  There will not be a 10% discount on fabric and patterns for these.  Some of them will have patterns supplied.

Unless we have a scheduled class, every Saturday is a “Free Sew Saturday”.  Come in with your sewing machine, tools and your unfinished projects and work on them.

Tea Party Quilt:  Saturday, March 13th and27th at 10 am.  This is not technically a class.  It is a get together to make the “Sweet Tea” Quilt.  We still have 2 sets of patterns, so if you are interested, let us know so we can cut the kits.  The cost is $105 and this includes all of the fabric for the front, steam-a-seam and the patterns.  It will run through March so the sooner you join us the better.  We will be meeting twice a month, but you are welcome to come in anytime to work on the quilt.

Quilts without Corners:  Thursday, March 11th at 9:30.  LaDonna will be teaching out of the book “Quilts Without Corners” by Cheryl Phillips.  She made the butterfly but there are other choices in the book using the same method.

Tootsie Roll Bolster Pillow:  Friday, March 19th at 9:30.  This is a small project that is excellent for beginners.  It is a good way to get comfortable with the decorative stitches on your machine.

Come in and check out the samples for the classes to see if it might be something you are interested in.
